I’ve said a lot of things about painting. Most of it, I probably still believe. The meaning of a painting is the way it looks, the way we see it. It’s a way to get at truth, at beauty ... The difficulty in talking about it lies in its contrariness. It’s a labor of love; it’s taking pain. It’s a blessing, a burden. It’s the easiest thing in the world; it is the hardest thing in the world … So, you see, it’s a lot like everything else in this life ...
